26 December The Woods Hey, look, Josh made biscuits and bacon! Guess I’m ready to eat again. The gym is a distant, hazy memory. We’re having pizza for lunch. Regret for dinner. Remorse for dessert. Two generous helpings.

20 December San Sebastian How is it that’s I’ve been in Spain for 5 days and have not yet had any thick, pudding-like hot chocolate? Well, here it was at last. With an almond tart, too, because I can. By evening I was hungry again. We’d found a place the night before that had some good looking food marching by, so we made a reservation. It was at this point that my liver...

16 December San Sebastian Oh, have I got some stories for you. I spent a week in San Sebastian, mostly eating and drinking. I am now made mostly of tapas and wine. Once I arrived, I went directly to one of the old-school places. The afterwork crowd was clustered ‘round the counter, wine in one fist, rich pork products in the other. I elbowed my way through and pointed to the ones that...

11 December Bitchin’ Kitchen You gotta see this show: Bitchen’ Kitchen, hosted by Nadia G. She wears really high heels and  tons of makeup and sparkly clothing and hangs out in her punk/goth kitchen that’s decorated with baby heads and disembodied hands. And she speaks in the strangest Italian-Canadian accent and makes comfort food to ease your depression and/or addiction....

9 December Epices Du Traiteur I spent all day Thursday digesting. By evening I was ready to go again. This time, we opted for something quiet and warm. Epices Du Traiteur is a bright little place that I’ve passed by many times, but never stepped into. We were lured by the brik which looked like something Napoleon might have worn on Crazy Fried Hat Day. It is a Tunisian specialty: egg,...

8 December The John Dory Part of the Ace Hotel complex, The John Dory is the seafood side of the building. We had feared high decibles and roving hipsters, but were pleasantly surprised by the ease of eating—not too loud and very friendly and comfortable. In full holiday eating mode, we ordered almost everything on the menu, beginning with the oysters. It is an oyster bar, after all,...

4 December The Woods I’m not completely sure where I am but it’s a good place. It’s a beautiful here and warm and there’s good music and I haven’t stopped eating since I arrived. We started with pancakes and then went to the diner and then came home and made more stuff. Short ribs, to be precise. I believe the secret to their goodness is balsamic vinegar, which...

2 December Becca’s House Becca kicked off Festivus with an ode to condiments. She sang their praises and served them with cheese and crackers and really good champagne. Somehow we managed to keep them off her carpet. She applied them to the fish using her secret method, which makes fish sweet and tart and splendid. There was a different condiment for the sausage. You remember the...

29 November Home I wanted to document all the turkey I’ve eaten this week, but this was the only meal I remembered to photograph. But I am now made mostly of turkey. I’ve sprouted some tail feathers. One of those red wobbly things is growing under my chin. I’ve acquired a startled look. I am mysteriously attracted to grain and cranberry sauce. I must avoid hunters.
